Scaffolding 's presence What is the 〇〇 place created by "Art Studio × scaffolding"?

Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, a town with a history of more than 1,000 years as a ceramics production center, has served as a location for numerous filming locations, including pottery-making techniques and a period shopping street. The city has been recognized as a Japanese Heritage Town. In Seto City, which is full of such attractions, there is a joint studio "Taneri Studio" where various artists gather. The building, which was once an abandoned building, was renovated as a DIY project and has become a place for artists to gather.

This year, to commemorate its 5th anniversary, TANERI gallery opened. In the scaffolding, which is an indispensable art exhibition in the gallery, the space is designed using "wedge binding type scaffold". During construction, we asked about the concept and the possibilities of scaffolding, and as a sequel, we asked Riku Shitara, the representative of Taneri Studio, about the "× scaffolding of the art studio" created by scaffolding.

A large white canvas on which the works will be exhibited. The existence of a wall base (scaffolding and others) that supports it behind the scenes.

If you look around the back, you can see that the scaffolding is used as a storeroom for art supplies and reference books, while also serving as an announcement corner, and it fits in with the space. What was the reaction of the artists and visitors to the gallery?

Shitara: The gallery created by ASNOVA with scaffolding was very well received by artists and customers belonging to Taneri Studio. In particular, I was happy that people in the shopping district saw the gallery exhibits and said, "That's interesting" and "This is the kind of work you were doing."

Even though we have a base in a shopping district, it is an atelier for artists, and there are few opportunities to come into contact with the outside world, so having a space where we can connect with the outside world was a step forward for us at Taneri Studio. Architectural customers were also interested in creating a gallery in scaffolding and enjoyed it, and I hope to continue to connect with various people from here.

How good is the performance?

It is 120 points of 100 + 20. Really. At least there are no galleries made with scaffolding in Aichi Prefecture, and the galleries face the street and the sunlight comes in, and the whiteness of the gallery walls and the metallic scaffolding shelves shine, and the works on display are also great.

Gallery with sunlight. The scaffolding that blends into the art is also cool.

The atmosphere of scaffolding matches the concept of a "casual gallery that you can walk in" on the West Coast of the United States.

Is there anything that comes to mind when you hear "scaffolding creates a 〇〇 place"?

Shitara: "A place created by scaffolding. Is it "intriguing" to come up with a word that goes into 〇〇scaffolding? This word came to mind as a good meaning that "intrigues" and expands the imagination of children who remain even after they grow up, like a secret base created with friends when they were a child, or an interesting space that they imagined when they were children. I think that the word "wandering" in a place where you can casually enter has the same meaning as entering because you are "intrigued".
Normally, the scaffolding of the doe, but in the studio, it is the scaffolding of art supplies. Multi-use is also an attraction of scaffolding utilization.

How close do you feel you are to that ideal place? What other elements are still needed?

Shitara: Since awareness is still low, we will steadily promote it through social media and word of mouth, and since the venue is complete, the next step is to think about what kind of interesting things we can do inside the venue and how we can help people. Interesting things include art exhibitions, which are important as a base, but we would also like to hold events and exhibitions such as film screenings, mobile restaurants (which we held last year and were well received), and young select shops.

"Renting" a place as a place to create such a large piece of art. There are many forms of creating places of tomorrow in society.
Shitara: Helping people means providing a place. Artists need a place to create and store their works. So I want to help people like that. There are artists who don't have a large workspace and can't create large works, so I think that activities like providing a space for them to use for a month and posting about it on social media will become more important in the future.
